Chiropractic Care for Ligament Hypermobility
Understanding flexible joints and how chiropractic care can help
What is ligament hypermobility?
People with ligament hypermobility have ligaments that are
more elastic than average. This allows joints to move beyond their normal range
of motion. Hypermobility can occur in a single joint or throughout the entire
body, known as generalised joint hypermobility.
Many people with hypermobility experience no problems at
all. However, for others, the increased movement places additional demands on
muscles and surrounding tissues to keep joints stable.
Why do hypermobile joints become painful?
Although the ligaments are more flexible, the muscles surrounding the joints have to work much harder to provide stability. Over time, these muscles can become overworked, fatigued, and tight.
The nervous system may also become more sensitive, causing muscles to remain tense as they attempt to protect unstable joints. This can lead to ongoing discomfort even without an obvious injury.
